Caleb turned six this weekend and we celebrated with a small family affair. He asked for a castle cake, so Davina made it for him. We spent the past Saturday exploring Jamestown with Grandpa, Grandma, and Great-Grandma.

We started off the day with a little picnic on the tables outside. The day was hot but not unbearable, the shade and a little breeze was still in order.

Elijah spent the day in the stroller and mostly enjoyed himself.

Caleb and Micah found a game to play, the object being to throw the corn cobs with feathers attached through the hanging rings. Caleb got the idea; Micah made his own rules.

Mountain View Bible Camp Week

We spent the last week of July speaking at Mt. View Bible Camp in Dugspur (VA). The week was Teen Girls (12-16 years old). We were the missionary speakers, and had 45 minutes every morning to share with the ladies concerning missions. We also had time to interact with them outside of that time, and most of the pictures are from those times.

Caleb was able to help out during the water game by soaking the campers!

Well, the weather men got it right for once! We are having a blizzard like none in recent memory here in the south-eastern tip of VA! At around 1 a.m. last night there was no trace of snow...so we went to bed expecting the "snow apologists" to be backtracking all day today. Instead, we have been tracking through the 6 inches of snow that has fallen to this point. SWEEET!!

Dad and Mom were getting ready to go to the Concert and Orchestra Christmas 'Spectacular' at church last night. Micah came running upstairs to see what the commotion was, saw us dressed up to go out, and asked, "Where going?" (Micah tends to drop words, or they run together so it sounds like they are not there. So, 'where are you going?' comes out 'where going?') We told him that Dad and Mom were going out on 'a hot date.' Of course, his natural next question was, "I go?" Dad told him, "Well, you have to find your own date!" Micah turned and ran to the top of the stairs, off in search of a 'date.' Then the reality set in, and Micah realized he he had know idea what a 'date' was. So back he came to Dad and Mom, and he asked, "Help find date?"

Well, if you have been awaiting the announcement of Davies son #3, here it is: Elijah was born Dec. 5th, a healthy 21" long and 7 lb. 1/2 oz....oh wait, 7 lbs. 5 oz.,....hold on, 7 lbs. 8 oz....well, whatever he was he is here! Everything went smoothly, and Mom and baby are doing well physically, and the family is getting into the routine of having a baby in the house. The boys like the baby, Micah especially is fascinated by him. Here are some quick pics of the newest son...

Caleb has gotten the hang of catching the frisbee now, and does fairly well. He brings lots of effort to the sport, as you can tell from this catch!

Andy took the boys to the YMCA park to play while Davina went for her doctor's appointment. It was a little soggy from all the rain the previous day, but that did not stop the Davies boys! A little football, frisbee, and playground tag helped to keep them busy...and depleted their energy enough for their afternoon naps. Fall is the best time of the year!

Caught this one out of a hole right below the cabin in GA. We had fished there on Wed. night and caught only 'chubs' (glorified minnows), and then fished another part of the stream Thur. morning. I went back when the rest of the family was napping, and caught four chubs from the first hole we had tried on Wed. night. However, the last chub brought the trout out of the shadows of the dead fall that lay over the river, and the trout actually was chasing the chub, snapping and biting at it. I cast twice more and hooked it and caught it! The whole time I was pulling it in I kept thinking, "He is going to snap my line!" But he didn't, and we're having fish tonight!

Caleb and Micah decided to help Andy 'fix' the car. Really he was just changing the oil, but Caleb and Micah make it look like a complete carburetor reassembly! Soon enough they will be able to do it by themselves, but for now, Micah would probably smear the oil all over his body and Caleb would attach the oil filter to the radiator! Nice work men!

Caleb's First Visit to the Dentist

Today was the big day...Caleb's first visit to the dentist! We scheduled his appointment a few weeks ago and have been talking about it with him to prepare him for it. We explained that they were going to look in his mouth and clean it so his teeth would be nice and sparkling clean... there is nothing to be afraid of...they are here to help you keep your teeth from decaying...etc. This morning when we woke up he asked with a worried expression on his face "Mama, are they going to use 'the yankers' on me? I don't want them to use 'the yankers' on me." YANKERS?!! who said anything about "yankers"? For a couple of weeks, I have been trying to ease his mind so he will not be fearful of the dentist and now the poor boy thinks they are going to yank his teeth out. I was trying to think back about all of the conversations we had about the dentist to determine where he was getting this idea and then it dawned on me that 3 or 4 months ago we had checked out The Berenstein Bears Go to the Dentist from the library and Brother Bear had tricked Sister Bear into thinking the dentist was going to use "yankers" to pull out her teeth! I explained to Caleb that the dentist certainly was NOT going to use "yankers" on his teeth...I could tell he was still a bit nervous when he saw the sugar-free suckers in the waiting room and asked if those were the rewards that the brave boys and girls got if they didn't cry. He was literally shaking when the hygenist started moving the chair back to clean his teeth. I was so proud of him though, he was so brave and did just fine! Once he saw that she was just cleaning his teeth he relaxed and even tried to have a conversation with the hygenist while she was cleaning his teeth... I had to tell him to stop talking so she could clean his teeth :) On the way back to the car, he grabbed my hand and said in his most grown-up voice "Thank you, Mom for taking me to the dentist so I could have my teeth cleaned." I loved it!

I took the boys over to Sabrina's tonight for a little Christmas cookie action. Sabrina had the dough all ready when we got there so we put the kids up to the table to let them create their own yummy treats. It didn't take Caleb and Noah long to figure out it was more fun to eat the dough than roll it out. After the first batch, we figured it was better to let them help with the icing. What fun! Thanks Sabrina and kids!

Mouse in the House

Chesapeake, VA -- Friday, December 5th, began as any normal Friday in the Davies household. Davina and Andy enjoyed their exercise routines, while Caleb and Micah enjoyed their morning by playing with their toys, books, and games. At approximately 11:00 a.m., the family began to load the car for their weekend trip to Massanutten Resort. Andy was the first to spot trouble! Standing near the front door, he noticed a small movement down the hall near the back bedroom door, and subsequently saw a mouse run from the bedroom into the boys' bathroom. Knowing the panic an announcement such as, "There is a mouse in the house," would cause, he chose to drop the things in his hands and run to block any escape route from the bathroom. He calmly asked Davina to get the broom (which she did) and a towel (which she went to get). At the same time, Caleb followed Andy halfway down the hall to see what the commotion was. While Davina went to retrieve a towel, the mouse made a break for it. Squirting under the bathroom door, he made a hard left, running down the hall. Of course, Caleb standing in his way did not slow him down. Rather he ran right over Caleb's feet, causing Caleb to scream (yes, like a little girl!) and dance around like his feet were on fire! The mouse, having now made it to the living room, bolted behind the couch, where all attempts to see him were thwarted. Caleb, after the initial shock wore off, climbed onto one of the chairs in the kitchen for safety, where he remained for the rest of the ordeal. Davina reemerged from the boys' room, and being informed that there was a mouse in the house, took up a position similar to Caleb's on the bench next to the front door, where she remained for the duration of the ordeal. Andy and Micah were left to defend the home from the vile interloper, who was now hiding behind the couch and/or bookshelves in the front room. The mouse did show himself one or two more times, running from one bookshelf to another, and running out from under the Christmas tree, which elicited more screams from Davina and Caleb. Micah enjoyed all the excitement, standing around and babbling incoherently about the speed and elusiveness of the mouse. After trying unsuccessfully to capture or corner the critter again, Andy and Davina bought four mousetraps and set them up in strategic locations around the apartment. Then the family went on vacation. UPDATE: Upon arriving back at the apartment on Sunday night, a survey of the traps turned up one dead mouse. No pictures of the deceased have been released to the public. Also, the name of deceased has not been released to allow time to alert the next of kin. (And if the next of kin comes around looking for him, there will be four traps waiting to inform him/her!)

These pics are from the other day when I made the mistake of texting a quick message to Sarah without keeping an eye on the one remaining puddle from the rain. Seriously, I was busy for maybe a minute and that was all these boys needed to splash muddy water all over each other. Since the damage was already done, I let them have a few more splashes before we came inside. They were so happy with themselves...little stinkers!

I was scrambling for my camera this weekend to catch a picture of Micah and his new friend. Andy and I took the boys to the mall to get them out of the house since it had been pouring down rain for 2 days. As we were walking through Dick's Sporting Goods, I realized Micah had stopped walking with us. I looked back and found him holding hands with the mannequin and babbling on and on. Caleb has an imaginary friend named Frankie and Micah has a mannequin friend...great!!

Today was Kid Workshop Day at Home Depot. Usually it is some kind of woodworking project that involves a hammer, screwdriver, and some glue. Caleb looks forward to this day all month long. Today's project was supposed to be a leaf press but the lady accidentally gave us the leftover projects that they were going to use if they ran out. She discovered her mistake after she had given us the wrong ones and she offered us a leaf press. We told her we were fine... it ended up being even better for us because the leftover projects were a firetruck and a paper football game. (I'm sure the boys would have had just as much fun making a leaf press but when playtime comes their "leftover" projects will be so much more exciting!) If you have kids, check out your local Home Depot the first Saturday morning of every month from 9-12. I think they do this nationwide. It's a great way to teach your kids to work with their hands and it's totally FREE! Oh, yeah...they give the kids their own Home Depot aprons and a new pin every month when they complete the workshop. Caleb loves looking like one of the "big guys"!

Don't look at the "yucky-yuckies"!

Andy usually does the posting on our family blog but I decided to try a post. Caleb is 4 now and ever since he was 2, he has called Halloween decorations "Yucky-yuckies" (I'm not sure where he got that from?!) He used to cry when we would walk by the displays at the store. Now he uses his best teacher voice and dutifully tells Micah "Turn your eyes away, Micah...don't look at the "yucky-yuckies"!" We went to a pumpkin patch a few weeks ago and picked out a pumpkin to take home and carve. When carving time came, Caleb was very concerned that we carve a friendly lion and not have a "yucky-yucky" pumpkin. Andy carved a nice friendly lion with a little help from the boys. It sits on our back patio now and gives a nice soft glow (until Micah picks it up for a closer look and knocks over the candle).

It's official: 5 years of wedded bliss for Davina and Andy!! For the anniversary celebration, Andy and Davina headed to the Outer Banks for a relaxing day at the beach and some fun boogie boardin in the surf. Well, one out of two ain't bad...

It is hard to describe the waves, but two things posed definite problems: (1) Tropical storm Cristobal off the coast, (2) the rip tide advisory for the Outer Banks! The first we knew about on Friday night. The second we found out about Sunday morning, that is, the day after we were at the beach!

The next three pictures show Andy in the surf. Noticeably absent are any photos of Davina in the surf. Short story concerning Davina's beach adventure. Both Andy and Davina waded into the surf to catch the waves on their boogie boards. Andy tried to catch the first wave and was severely thrashed, tumbling head over heels and spat out on the beach like a modern day Jonah from the ocean depths. Davina, tried to catch the next wave. It is unfortunate that Andy's experience was duplicated by Davina, with one exception: Davina did not make it to the beach after the first wave, but was caught by a second, and possibly a third. After ten minutes of this repeated thrashing Davina chose to watch from the safety of the beach. If that were not bad enough, as she made her way up the beach, Davina noticed a couple sitting nearby with bemused looks on their faces. She laughed light heartedly and commented, "I sure did get pounded by the waves." The man smirked, and the lady stifled a laugh. It is not certain but highly likely (from observing their later behavior) that these two have a video on their camera phones of Davina being pounded by the surf. (If anyone happens upon it on YouTube, please let Andy know...he'd like to see it too!)

Andy is actually in the middle of this wave, kind of the dark spot in there. But that gives a sense of the overwhelming crash of the surf.

After the beach, Davina and Andy took a short excursion to the Wright Memorial in Kitty Hawk.

After a full day, Davina and Andy made the final stop the Melting Pot in Virginia Beach. The food was delicious, but the reservation was for 9:15 p.m. Consequently, the celebrating couple did not make it home until after 11 p.m.! What a long day!

One final note: we would like to thank the Moraweic's (Gary, Susan, and Emily) for watching Caleb and Micah for Saturday and Sunday so we could celebrate our anniversary. We certainly cannot repay you for your kindness, but we thank God for you!

A Day at the Beach with Micah

We all went to the beach at Sandbridge the weekend of July 11th. It's hard to believe that it is the first time this summer at the beach for us...

Micah enjoyed the sand, and the sandwiches, and a few tidal pools, but not much else.

"When's lunch?...is it now?...how about now?...maybe a snack?...second breakfast? elevensies? afternoon tea?...SERIOUSLY! WHEN DO I EAT?!!!"

Just a little Christmas update, with all the trimmings!! Our lovely Christmas tree--a 6-7 foot Frasier fir from Lowe's. We bought and decorated it on December 1st.
Caleb and Micah's 'Little People Nativity' set--on Sunday Dec. 2nd (since the boys were sick and we did not go to church) we broke out the nativity set and told the first part of the story, about Mary and Joseph and the angel's announcement of Jesus' birth, and their journey to Bethlehem.
Andy and Davina's stockings, with new snowman stocking holders from Target! Andy has a screwdriver from Lowe's in his stocking! 'Why post that here and ruin the surprise?' you wonder. On the way to buy the Christmas tree with all of the family in the car, Andy told Caleb, "We're going to Lowe's." Caleb asked, "To get daddy a screwdriver?!" There was an awkward silence, with questioning looks from Andy and the attempt to act innocent by Davina. Finally, Andy asked Caleb, "Did mommy put a screwdriver in daddy's stocking?" The overly enthusiastic reply from Caleb, "YES!" So, now WE all know....
Our Christmas purchase was this double wide...cabinet! Unfortunately, one of the doors came with two broken hinges, so Davina called the company to get replacement hinges. When they come we will be set to go! We like the extra shelf space, and the cabinet section to put away the loose items we have lying around.

Thanksgiving with the Smiths

We traveled to Ben and Carissa's for the Thanksgiving holiday. Driving up on Wednesday night, we stayed till Sunday morning. To sum it all up: ate all the food Carissa could cook (all of us); played all the ping-pong games Ben could stand winning (Andy); fought over all the toys Luke and Ethan own (Caleb); spit up on all the carpet the Smith's had (Micah); shopped at all the stores at Potomac Mills (Davina);put up all the sheet rock needed to complete the basement with Ben(Andy); fell asleep at 9 PM on the couch after putting the boys to bed (everyone but Andy)! It was a rowdy good time for all of us. Davina wishes the Smiths lived closer...Andy knows if they did, no one would get anything done! Ben and Carissa--thanks for opening your home! We'll do it again next year!

Andy had a long week and was getting ready for the day Friday morning when "it" happened. He was sitting in the chair next to the desk, tired and contemplating how to get just a little more rest, when Caleb asked, "Daddy, do you want to play cars with me?" Since Caleb is in the 'Why'-stage, Andy asked, "Why?" Caleb answered, "Because your my friend, Daddy." Having kids is challenging--just like anything else in life is challenging--but with great incentives like that, it is more than worth it!

As some of you know, a catechism is 'instruction in the principles of Christianity using set questions and answers.' Well, Caleb has his own catechism. We started him off with these questions, "Does Daddy love you?" (Yes.) "Does Mommy love you?" (Yes.) "Does God love you?" (Yes.) "How do you know that God loves you?" (He sent His Son, Jesus, to die on the cross for our sins.) Well, Davina decided to ask a few more questions pertaining to his Cubbies lesson tonight. She asked, "Did God make your eyes? Why?" (Yes. To see.) "Did God make your mouth?" (Yes. To talk.) Then she asked, "Did God make your nose? Why?" Caleb's response: "Yes. To pick it when I get boogers!" Hmm...should have named him after the Prince of Preachers for that line!

Saturday with the Smiths!

We spent Saturday with the Smith's. After driving through a horrendous downpour on the way to their house Friday night, Saturday turned out to be a beautiful day. The men took the boys out to play on the playground in the morning, where most of the pictures were taken. It was a great day to visit, and Davina kept saying on the way home, "I wished they still lived across the parking lot!"

Just some pictures of the boys from the early part of September. Caleb's favorite thing to do is ride the bike any and all the time. Micah is getting huge! The dog was for Caleb on his first Christmas and is about three feet long. As far as the picture with Micah standing in Andy's hand, that is for the grandparents--to check their heart rates!
